[ she's waiting at the door for him, maybe a little nervous about letting someone in her room at all. but when she hears the knock, she opens the door, checking the hallway behind him before pulling him inside.
when the door's closed, she doesn't even bother leading into the news. ]
[ Maybe it's a little unusual for her, for them—all this paranoia he doesn't know what to do with. Bells' eyes settle on her the second he's inside, not sure what say, but Jo mostly says it for him.
He stares. A lot. ]
Uh, no? [ Because how in the fuck would that make any sense???? ]
[ you wanna look at her face right now, bells? does she look like she's lying? ]
I would know. He nearly ripped my throat out. [ and just in case he needs more of a reason to believe her, she reaches around him to grab the axe benny gave her. see? ]
He went home last jump, and apparently came back a vamp. [ there's a tension in her neck that hasn't gone away since that day, which has only made the bags under her eyes darker. ]
[ Which is when everything sort of clicks into place. He doesn't know what the damn axe is for, but his eyes are leveled on her face, noticing those small things he hadn't before. Bells curls his fingers, not trusting himself to touch her just yet. ]
That's not an excuse. [ Nope. Sorry. He doesn't care if he was born a vampire. Or anything else for that matter. ] Shit. [ The curse is low, and then, he steps forward to gently press his thumb to her chin. A fleeting touch that doesn't go beyond that. There's only one solution to this problem: ]
[ she should have seen this coming, but at the same time she couldn't have kept it from bells for long. her eyes follow his face when he steps closer, as if he's still not convinced.
but then there's the touch, and jo's grip tightens around the axe out of instinct alone. she's basically been attached to the thing since benny handed it to her, never letting it out of her sight. ]
No. [ it comes out faster than jo even realizes, her voice thick. ] Bells- I'm going to figure something out, but we're not killing him.
[ He sees it, how her hand tightens around the axe, and his mouth twists even harder into a frown, brows furrowing just a little. He's doing his best not to get too angry, but he can feel it boiling under his skin. Despite the way she seizes up a little, Bells doesn't move his hand.
He expects it of the ship, to hurt people, but when it's others-- people he fucking knows and almost trusts-- ]
You figure something out then, but I'm not gonna wait around for him to do it again. [ He would. Or Bells thinks he might. ] Fuck. Jo, I mean— He knows better. You know he knows better. [ There's a pause, thinking it over. ] ...did you let him?
[ Because if you did, and he took advantage, so help Dean. He'd be dead in a second.]
[ her attentions have shifted, now, watching bells and worried about how he's going to react more than anything. at his question, though, her face screws up. ]
What? No. Fuck no I didn't let him. [ do you think she's crazy? ] He was avoiding me for the whole month. I went to track him down and when I caught up to him, he'd apparently been starving himself of it. I got too close and he jumped at the smell.
[ she shrugs in that 'my mistake, I survived, whatever' way. ]
[ He just had to be sure, and besides, the look on her face says more than what she's telling him anyhow. ] Okay. [ The word is a little slow, surprisingly calm for him. ] I need you to stay here, and don't, you know, go anywhere until I get back.
[ Because he's going to go kill himself a Winchester. And he turns away from her, already halfway out the door. ]
[ she's not sure how to take his calm, or the fact he just...oh. ]
Bells- [ she tries to stop him, before he turns to the door. she's reaches after him, though, with her free hand. trying to grab at his arms. ] Bells, I know that look. You can't.
[ He can't? Bells glances at her over his shoulder, the slightest spark of annoyance there when he meets her eyes. ]
And you can't defend him forever, Jo. He fucked up, and he needs to know that something like that-- [ Teeth grit, he pulls away. ] You don't do that to someone you're supposed to care about.
He did, I'm not defending that. [ she meets his annoyed look with the stubborn set of her jaw, meeting his eyes and not letting him look away from her. ] But he knows he fucked up.
[ he tries for the door and she grabs for his arm again, her grip a little tighter this time. ] I'm serious, Bells, don't. I don't need you trying to protect me any more than I needed Dean last time.
[ And far too easily, he jerks it away, determined not to look at her and keep moving for fear of actually giving in to her demands. ] Maybe this isn't about protecting you, Jo. [ Out the door, and he peers around it to give her one last look. ] Maybe it's about you being happy for once.
[ Without another word, he disappears. Try to stop him now. ]
Happy? What the- Bells! [ she lunges for the door, but he's already gone, heading off down the hallway.
the worst part? she's not going to follow him, stuck to her doorframe with the axe hanging in her grip. she does, after a moment, yell after him- pissed. ]
