[ Scott doesn't know whether it would be better to tell Jo in person or not, but he doesn't want her to worry for the rest of the day wondering what it could be until she comes home, so Scott just comes out with it. ]
[ she stares at the text for a few minutes when she first gets it, not sure if she's reading it correctly or not. but then it hits her like a rock, hard and heavy in her chest, and she's walking before she even starts to respond. ]
[ jo doesn't even respond to that bit, packing up the errands she'd been running and putting her stuff away, already heading off in the direction of the roadhouse before she was really done.
not that it really matters, because as the text scott just send settles in, jo feels herself falling right back into that familiar sort of darkness. that overwhelming, drowning kind of sense that this is it. they're all leaving.
but she bucks up and keeps moving, pushing through the front door just a couple of minutes later - slightly out of breath? maybe. - and letting out a breath, stepping in to the bar and taking the seat next to scott. ]
[ Scott looks towards the door when he hears it open, managing a smile at Jo because it be would rude not to greet the owner of the bar that way, even with how low Scott's mood is right now. ]
You think I'd be sitting on this stool right now if I'd gotten through all of it? [ He'd totally be passed out on the floor. ]
[ honestly, jo wouldn't have blamed him if he didn't smile. if he hadn't even acknowledged her when she walked in. but he did, and she just took the seat next to him, waiting for a second or two before she stands to reach over the counter and under the bar. ]
It's possible. You could have a tolerance I hadn't known about. [ still trying to joke over here, for some reason. not that it matters, when she pulls out a half-handle of jack daniels she'd been hiding, setting it on the bar. ]
